Shared Content Online – Who Owns It?

Many students will use some form of online service to share their work, such as Flickr, Youtube, and even Facebook.  In the light of Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) changing it’s terms of service which “suggested that the app, and its owner Facebook, would be allowed to sell people’s uploaded photos or related data to third parties without permission“, just what are your intellectual property rights over the images and text you’re sharing on sites like these?

This article from The Guardian provides a useful overview of content ownership on Youtube, Flickr, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and they’re all a little different.  It does pay to check the terms and conditions of the sites before and during the time that you use them as they can change.
